A YOUNG chess player is through to the county finals of a national competition.

Luke Tooth, 10, from Stamford, who attends Malcolm Sargent Primary School, progressed to the Lincolnshire final of the Delancey UK Schools Chess Challenge after scoring a maximum 21 points at the school stage.

He will be joined at the county final, held in Lincoln tomorrow, by six other Malcolm Sargent pupils who qualified by being best boy and girl in their age range.

Luke, who is a member of the Stamford Chess Club, was awarded a trophy for his score.
