Mayor of Oakham carries water during Fairtrade Fortnight
A demonstration of a water pump was just one of the events taking place at the weekend as part of Fairtrade Fortnight.
Rutland Youth Council leafletted in Oakham on Saturday last week to encourage shoppers to visit the Big Brew event at Oakham Methodist Church, which raised £250, and the water pump demonstration outside All Saints’ Church.
The working water pump illustrated the type fitted in developing countries, enabling people to have clean water. Rejoice Okai, of Uppingham, originally from Ghana, came along to show how it should be done – on the head!
Jayne Woodcock, mayor of Oakham, was among the visitors who tried the pump and also lifting the five gallon container of water to discover the problem of carrying it very far!
