Melton and Rutland landlords urged to act now to comply with new fire safety laws set to come into effect
Landlords in Melton and Rutland are being urged to act now to ensure they’re ready for new safety laws aimed at saving dozens of lives each year.
The regulations are expected to come into effect from October, subject to Parliamentary approval, making it compulsory for all landlords to fit smoke alarms in homes. This requirement now includes landlords who rent properties to single families.
Under the new laws smoke alarms must be fitted on every floor of the property, as well as carbon monoxide alarms in properties which burn solid fuels.
It’s the responsibility of the landlord to provide the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and to check the alarms are working at the start of every new tenancy. The potential penalty for failure to comply with the regulations is a fine of up to £5,000.
To help landlords gear up for the new regulations, the Government has provided Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service with a limited supply of free smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to give to landlords (properties excluded from receiving these free alarms but which still require smoke alarms to be fitted are those rented to students or classed as houses with multiple occupations.
Station manager Steve Robinson-Day said: “We’re keen to work with local landlords to improve the safety of tenants across our area and we urge those landlords who rent to single families who have not previously fitted smoke alarms to do so as soon as possible.
“We would urge those landlords who need to take action, in order to comply with the new regulations, to contact us before October.”
