2019 Christmas cards on sale in Stamford feature advertising in the Rutland and Stamford Mercury from the 1940s




Quirky charity Christmas cards are on sale from the Mercury offices in Cherryholt Road, Stamford.

Each £4 pack of five cards features a seasonal advertisement from the newspaper, originally published in the 1940s.

They feature butchers, grocers, outfitters and electrical retailers who were then trading in the town.

Printed on high-quality card, the wording inside reads“A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year”.

Proceeds from sales of the cards will go to the charity The Stamford Mercury Archive Trust which helps maintain copies of the Mercury dating back to the 18th Century, and makes their pages accessible to people in Stamford.

A selection of notecards are also available that feature woodcuts from the newspaper before the advent of photographs.

These cost £5 per pack and are also available from the Mercury office.
