A military chef from RAF Wittering has won an award for his work in and out of the kitchen.

Senior Aircraftman Sam Mercer, 29, won the Smart Award for 2020.

The winner is drawn from a shortlist of 12 personnel who received the Station Commander’s monthly award for outstanding achievement.

Sam usually works at the Aviator Mess, where many of the station’s personnel eat daily, but he is currently working in the Falklands.

He helps colleagues to develop their skills and also organised a military-themed dining function at Peterborough Regional College, helping students to design a menu, budget their accounts and schedule tasks for the event.

He also supports SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, and helps the village community.

Sam said: “I wasn’t thinking about getting an award when I was doing these things, you’re just doing what you can do to help – like anyone who gets involved with charity work.

"It’s really important that we do stuff in the community, we have to be good neighbours, help develop young people and get involved in a positive way.”
