Guests at the Mercury Business Awards were encouraged to make a donation to Anna’s Hope, a charity which supports children and young people with brain tumours, and their families.

This year, the charity which was founded by Carole and Rob Hughes, from Pilsgate, in memory of their young daughter Anna who was just three years old when she died of a brain tumour, is marking its 15th anniversary.

During dinner, guests were shown a moving video in which Carole detailed Anna’s battle and talked about what the charity has achieved since its inception including funding a specialist children’s neuro oncology nurse at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge to help during treatment, and being the main funder of a specialist neuro rehabilitation service called Brainbow, which consists of specialist physiotherapists, specialist speech and language therapists and a specialist occupational therapist.

Guests were urged to donate generously and at the end of the awards ceremony, Mercury editor Kerry Coupe said £1,521 had been raised.

Carole said on stage: “Thank you very much. This has put a big smile on my face.

“As Kerry said, the Mercury has followed our story over the years and I have vowed not to stop until we achieve our goal.

“During the pandemic we didn’t get any government funding whatsoever. But, like you guys, we’re still here.”

Afterwards, Carole told the Mercury: “We really appreciate the generous donations from those who attended the event and this will help fund a month’s specialist neuro rehabilitation by the Anna’s Hope therapy team for 12 children.”
