When Phyllis Pawlett needed support during her long battle with cancer, it was Macmillan Cancer Care nurses who stepped in.

Now her son Ray wants to repay all the help and support that made his mum’s ordeal a little more bearable.

On Friday, July 25, the 45-year-old Tai Chi coach and Shiatsu therapist will get his head shaved to raise money for Macmillan.

Ray, of North Fen, Morton, said: “The charity helped look after my mother during her long battle with cancer.

“I just want to raise some money for the people who helped my mother.”

Mrs Pawlett, who had cancer in various parts of her body, died aged 67 in 2010.

While Ray had been thinking about doing something to raise money, it was meeting people who had cancer through his work that made him more determined to do something.

Then an advertisement from the charity reinforced his determination and he decided there was no time like the present.

Ray, who writes a monthly column for The Local, the Mercury’s sister paper, said: “I meet a lot of people through my job who are battling cancer. Many of them are going through chemotherapy and one of their fears is about losing their hair.

“I can’t claim to know how it feels to have cancer.

“But I can try and understand what it is like to lose my hair and empathise with my clients.”

Ray’s wife Tracy,44, whose friends have died of cancer thinks Macmillan are “amazing people” and fully backs her husband’s efforts.

The head shave will be at Wake House, in North Street, Bourne, where Ray runs his Ki-Ways business of Tai Chi and Shiatsu.

It will be done by Sarah Murtagh, a counsellor, who runs the nearby Still Waters stress relief and mentoring service.

Afterwards a class of adults with learning disabilities, to whom Ray is teaching Tai Chi, will paint the shaved head.

“It will give them something to laugh about,” Ray said.
