It is understood that a lorry has shed two tonnes of rubbish made up mostly of wood and polystyrene.

Officers say they are working to clear the carriageway.

One lane was closed because of the incident which happened at about 3.30am

A police spokeswoman said: “We were called at 3.28am this morning with reports of debris in the road on the A1 at Stibbington.

“Officers initially encountered five vans and a lorry all in lane one with their hazards on one mile south of Stibbington, just before the Sibson turn-off.

“Approximately one mile ahead of these vehicles another vehicle has lost a pallet of rubbish in lane one, about two tonnes of rubbish - wood and polystyrene.

“Highways officials closed one lane.”
