North West Cambridgeshire MP presses case for Red Arrows to be based at RAF Wittering in the House of Commons




North West Cambridgeshire MP Shailesh Vara has spoken in the House of Commons to press the case for RAF Wittering to be the new home for the RAF’s Red Arrows.

The Red Arrows are currently based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire but they are seeking a new home and RAF Wittering is one of three bases that has been shortlisted.

Ahead of the announcement nearly a year ago that RAF Wittering could become the new home for the air display team, a senior officer from the base told the Mercury it has the capability to take them.

The other two contenders are RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire and RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire.

During defence questions in the House of Commons Mr Vara, a Tory MP, said he believed RAF Wittering would be an ideal new location for the Red Arrows. He told the Defence Minister James Heappey,that he was prepared to assist him and Ministry of Defence officials further if required, including having another ministerial meeting.

In his reply the Minister said that a decision had not yet been taken and that he would welcome the opportunity to meet with Mr Vara and others who may be interested.
