Mystery as Oakham in Bloom Lands End Way flower bed is partly destroyed in suspected herbicide spraying

Oakham in Bloom have spoken of their devastation after part of a flower bed that brightens up the area around a petrol station was destroyed in a suspected herbicide spraying.

It is believed the beautiful bed, outside the BP Petrol Station on the corner of the Burley Park Way and Lands End Way roundabout, was sprayed with some kind of herbicide and volunteers discovered the damage yesterday (May 12).

Some of the flowers are shrivelled and dying.

Chris Morten, chairman of Oakham in Bloom, said: "As soon as the person who has been spraying has got as far as our notice, I think they have realised they shouldn't have sprayed our bed.

"Half of it has been sprayed and the other is still in tact.

"It's quite devastating really because everyone appreciated the beds and volunteers took the time to plant it up.

"It's a well-loved bed by both residents and tourists and it cost a lot of money.

"We're looking forward to entering East Midlands in Bloom and we're hoping to go for gold.

"It's such a shame that this has happened."

Mr Morten said that he was going to have a meeting with the manager of the BP Garage this afternoon (May 13) but the group are unsure as to who carried out the suspected spraying.
