Oakham Town Council reveals new-look Christmas tree after years of criticism
A sleek cone-shaped tree will take centre stage in Oakham this Christmas after previous decorations were criticised by the public.
For several years Oakham’s Christmas tree has come under fire for being “an embarrassment” to the town.
Campaigners even set up the Facebook group ‘Give Oakham the Christmas Tree It Deserves’. They said: “This page is to bring attention to the annual embarrassment that is Oakham’s Christmas tree. The tree looks awful and Oakham deserves better.”
As a result Oakham Town Council has entered a new three-year contract costing £9,000 to try something new.
Mayor Adam Lowe said: “There has been a lot of flack for the last three years - even people from our own camp have been slinging mud.
“The whole council agreed it would be good to try out the cone tree this year rather than cut down a perfectly health tree.”
The new contract covers the hire of a tree and lights, giving the council the option to try something new if this year’s decorations aren’t well received.
Mr Lowe added: “This is a leap of faith but we wanted to try something different. The company promised a wow factor.”
The lights switch on will take place on Sunday, December 2.
