New owners of Cambridge Road Chippy apply for alcohol licence

The new owners of a Stamford takeaway have applied for a licence to sell alcohol from the premises.

Robert and Jayne Hayre have submitted an application to South Kesteven District Council for the Cambridge Road Chippy, at 41 Cambridge Road. The couple, who live in Stamford but have spent the past six years running a pub in Peterborough, are in the process of buying the unit, previously known as the Britannia Take-Away.

They want to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises between 11.30am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 4pm to 9pm on Sundays.

The application has caused concern among some local residents, with Dawn Butcher, who has lived in Churchill Road for 10 years, telling the Mercury she fears an increase in litter and “groups of drunks hanging about late at night”.

But Mr Hayre said alcohol will only sold to people who are also buying food, ID checks will be carried out on anyone who looks under the age of 25 and those who appear intoxicated will not be served.

He said: “My wife and I are both very experienced licensees and local residents have nothing to worry about.”

Cambridge Road Chippy will serve fish and chips, pizzas, kebabs, chicken and burgers and will offer a home delivery service.
