A NEW sports facility opened its doors to the public on Tuesday.

Uppingham School Sports Centre in Stockerston Road, Uppingham, is a multi-million pound replacement for the former sports centre.

It opened to Uppingham School pupils in September, and has been available to a limited number of town groups since then.

The new facilities include a 25m swimming pool, a 50-station fitness studio, three squash courts, 12 outdoor tennis courts, a gymnasium and two dance studios.

The six court sports hall is used for a variety of activities such as badminton, basketball and indoor hockey and 5-a-side football.

The building has been praised for its environmetally-friendly design which includes solar panels and uses recycled rainwater.

A variety of memberships will be offered, as well as opportunities just to turn up, pay and play.

The centre will be open from 7am until 10pm most days and there will be a full programme of fitness classes.

The new sports centre based at Catmose College in Barleythorpe Road, Oakham, will open in April 2011.

Rutland County Council is asking people interested in using the facilities to get in touch so they can be up updated with news and information about the new centre which includes a 60-station gym.

The centre is part of the the new Catmose College campus.
