The National Farmer’s Union is reminding the public about the huge risks associated with sky lanterns and is urging people not to release them during New Year celebrations.

The NFU is highlighting the dangers as part of its Love your Countryside campaign.

The NFU has warned that the frames of lanterns can harm or even kill animals if they are ingested, along with fields of standing crops and buildings which are at significant risk of being set alight.

The Trading Standards Institute published a new code of practice for sky lanterns earlier this year, offering guidance for those retailing or using sky lanterns.
