Rutland Memorial Hospital staff welcome family of ducks
Staff at a town hospital have had a tough time coping with coronavirus, with diagnosed cases and the death of a patient with the disease last month.
Yet spirits can be raised in the simplest of ways, and the arrival of a bustling brood of mallard ducklings at Rutland Memorial Hospital in Oakham has certainly brought some welcome cheer to the wards.
Eighteen hatchlings appeared a few weeks ago in the patient garden, and after a consultation with specialists from the RSPB, they are being allowed to grow up in the enclosed courtyard, rather than risk trying to relocate them.
