A 25-year-old who taught at a prestigious public school has been banned from teaching for three years.

Ruth Vaughan, who worked at Oakham School, was banned for a minimum of three years after a disciplinary panel found that among other things she had sex with a former pupil at the school. The panel also found she had bought drinks at a pub for two other pupils who were under 18.

The National Council for Teaching and Leadership found Vaughan guilty of unacceptable professional conduct. Its findings said Vaughan had kissed the youth on the mouth “with tongues” after a school leavers’ ball. She later had sex with him after he started university,

The panel said her actions with the youth were “sexually motivated”. It also found that she was caught at the Lord Nelson pub buying drinks for two under-age students.

Imposing the ban on behalf of Education Secretary Nicky Morgan, council deputy director Alan Meyrick said Vaughan had “breached acceptable boundaries” and had been “dishonest”.

He said her conduct “fell significantly short of the standards expected of the profession”.

However, he said she was an inexperienced teacher and the disciplinary panel had expressed the view that with more experience, she may be able to demonstrate an ability to define appropriate boundaries, rendering her safe to return to practice.

The panel had recommended that she should be able to apply to have the ban lifted after three years and Mr Meyrick supported that.

Vaughan has the right to appeal to the High Court.
