Community groups with bright ideas for their area have the chance to bid for a share of funding.

A pot of £8,000 is being made available by Oakham Town Council for those in the town who have initiatives that will benefit the people of the town.

Local charities, groups and sports clubs can apply for the funding.

Their projects must have a specific purpose or provide facilities or activities for the young, elderly, disabled, the arts or improve the environment.

Organisations that have their applications shortlisted will be invited to make a presentation to thecouncil.

The council will then select its favourite pitches to receive a share of the funding.

Oakham town councillor Alf Dewis believes it is a great opportunity for groups to come up with initiatives they would not otherwise be able to consider.

He said: “It’s an ideal chance for groups to unite members of the community through a project.

“Groups are now finding it harder to get funding so it’s a great opportunity.

“It can be for developments that groups may want to start, sports clubs hosting events, activities for the young or elderly.

“Any initiative that will really benefit the people of Oakham.

“We’ve had quite a few applications in, so we’ll just have to see what meets the criteria and is a worthwhile initiative.”

Organisations planning a project that fits the criteria can submit an application by March 31.

Guidelines on how to apply are available to download on Oakham Town Council’s website at www.oakhamtowncouncil.gov.uk or by contacting town clerk Richard White on 01572 723627.
