William Collison, from Oakham School in Rutland, has been invited to join the elite National Youth Chamber Choir

A talented music scholar from Oakham School has been invited to join the elite National Youth Chamber Choir – an accolade usually given to those who are beginning their professional singing careers, not when they are still studying at school!

William Collison, who is in his final year of A-levels at Oakham School, won a place in the National Youth Choir of Great Britain earlier this year and despite only being 17 at the time, was privileged to start rehearsing with this choir for 18 to 25-year-olds.

He impressed the choir’s staff so much that he has now been invited to join the elite National Youth Chamber Choir.

“This is a massive achievement,” says Oakham’s director of music, Peter Davis, “as normally this group is only open to the top 16 senior singers from the National Youth Choir or its recent alumni.

“This, therefore, places William as one of the top 16 young choral singers in Great Britain – which is a huge accolade for him personally, and a wonderful testament to the quality of choral training and opportunities here at Oakham.”

William is now busy with rehearsals for both choirs, as well as taking part in a range of exciting opportunities - including making recordings, doing broadcasts and participating in concerts in top music venues. This includes a performance in London’s Royal Albert Hall this Christmas.

Looking further ahead, William is particularly looking forward to taking part in next year’s elite National Youth Choir tour to Australia and New Zealand; a highlight of which will be their performance as the sole representative of the UK at the World Symposium of Choral Music in Auckland.

In between all of his national choral commitments, William continues his musical journey at Oakham where he is one of the mainstays of the school’s chamber choir and chapel choir.

He is already practising for the tenor solo part in Mozart’s Requiem which the chapel choir will be performing at their gala concert in Oxford’s Sheldonian Theatre in March 2020.

William is one of a number of Oakhamians who are currently involved in national youth music organisations and when he leaves Oakham next year he hopes to combine a natural science degree with a choral scholarship.
