The funeral of Michael Wiggins, 73, of Fir Avenue, Bourne, took place at Marholm Crematorium, Ernest Fytche officiating.

Son of Fred and Enid Wiggins, he was educated at Greenwood School, Nottingham, on leaving school at the age of 15 he began an apprenticeship with the GPO in 1956. In the late 1960s he became a lecturer at the Telecom training school in Nottingham and in 1972 was promoted and moved to the Telecom training school in Peterborough until its closure. He then travelled to the Cambridge office and eventually in 1986 became a quality manager working in BTs London office, until his retirement in 1992.

He married Jackie in Chilwell, Nottingham in 1966.

Michael was an open air type of person, and was a member of the Cubs, Scouts and Rovers. Eventually he became a Scout leader. On moving to Bourne he helped re-open a Scout unit, meeting at the old grammar school. He enjoyed skiing, climbing, pot holing, walking and camping.

A member of the U3A group he enjoyed various activities including art and bridge. During his retirement he became involved with the WRVS and was a member of the emergency team. He also helped support the Leukaemia coffee mornings where he became known as the ‘Soup Man’.

During his long illness he was cared for by Jackie and his family, supported by Dr Wheatley, district nurses from the Hereward Group Practice and a team of carers from Bloomsbury, Marie Curie, Prestige Nursing, St Barnabas Hospice, Macmillan Nurses and The Carer Sitters Service.

Bereaved are his widow Jackie, children Heather, Nicola, Simon and Fiona and grandchildren Michaela and Jake Gordon and Joshua and Megan Waring.
