Kenneth Smith

THE funeral service and celebration of the life of Kenneth (Ken) Smith, took place at Uppingham Parish Church, the Rev Roy Seden officiating.

Ken died after a short illness at his home at Parkfield Road, Oakham, surrounded by his family.

The sixth of seven children born to Rachel and Arthur Smith, he was born and educated at Uppingham. He attended the National School and at the age of 14 left school and worked as a farm worker.

For many years he worked in the building trade as a labourer and scaffolder. In the eight years before his retirement in 1989, Ken enjoyed being a caretaker at Uppingham CE Primary School.

For many years he enjoyed football, firstly as a player for Uppingham Town FC, where he won many cups and medals with the team, and later as an avid supporter of Arsenal.

In later years he played bingo, enjoyed the odd flutter on the horses, and was a keen gardener.

Most of all Ken was a devoted family man and loved to be surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ken and his wife, Sheila, would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this October.
