Robert Craig

ROBERT Craig, formerly of York Road, Stamford, died at Priory Court Nursing Home, Stamford, aged 83.

Son of the late Hugh and Agnes Craig of Glasgow, he was educated at schools in Glasgow and served an apprenticeship with his father.

He moved to Stamford as a young man, finding work at engineering company, Arthur Lions (later known as Newage Engineers and Cummins Generator Technologies) and worked there until his retirement, aged 65.

Robert was one of the first men to enter the REME under the National Service recruitment, but due to rheumatic fever, which left him with a damaged weak heart valve, he was pensioned out.

He never let this condition interfere with his life and kept active until he fractured both hips in early 2011.

Robert married his first wife Elsie and had two daughters, Roberta and Maxine. He was also stepfather to Richard, Graeme, Stuart, Alan and Anne, and had many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He then went on to meet Anna in Cyprus, a few years after the death of Elsie, and they were married in 1991. They had more than 20 happy years together in Stamford and travelled to Slovakia, where Anna used to live, spending most Christmases there. They also travelled around the world together, including Australia, Mexico and the Caribbean.

The funeral service took place at All Saints Church, Stamford, Peter Hart officiating. A lone piper was in attendance and six of his grandsons acted as pallbearers. Interment followed at Stamford Cemetery alongside his first wife Elsie.
