Roy Smith

THE funeral service for retired chargehand, Roy Smith, 85, of Witham Close, Stamford, took place at All Saints Church, Stamford.

Donations were made to SSAFA Forces Help.

He was the son of Owen and Nellie Smith and was educated at St Michael’s School, Stamford.

On leaving school at the age of 14 he joined Stamford Electrical as an apprentice, and later worked for Arthur Lyons and Newage.

In 1943 he served with the Fleet Air Arm as a fitter on aircraft, in Scotland, but was medically discharged in 1945.

He wanted to finish his seven year apprenticeship with Newage, but they were unable to help him, meanwhile he worked at Ketton, cutting up war tanks, after which, with the help of the Unions, he gained employment with Mirrlees Blackstones.

In 1948 he married Betty Ryan, from Easton on the Hill, and went on to work for Arthur Lyons again, Newage, and finally Cummings in 1954, working in the sheet metal shop.

In 1957 he was promoted to the press shop, and retired in 1988.

His hobbies included fishing, playing cribbage, dominoes and snooker and watching football and cricket. He also enjoyed gardening.

Widower of Betty, he leaves his children Elaine, Kevin and Rachel, seven grandchildren and five great grand- children.
