Sylvia Smith

SYLVIA Smith, of Gerrard Court, Uppingham, died at Rutland Memorial Hospital, aged 94.

She was the eldest daughter of William and Alice Clarke, and was raised and educated with her four brothers and four sisters in Lyddington until going into service at the age of 14 at Stoke Dry.

Sylvia met Arthur Smith and they were married in 1937 and settled in Lyddington until they moved to Uppingham in 1953 with their daughters Pauline and Doreen.

Three years later Stephen was born in Uppingham where she spent her time as a housewife raising her three children and later working at Uppingham 

Her favourite pastimes were touring the British Isles with the family in their caravan, knitting, gardening, reading, playing bingo and watching snooker on TV.

The funeral service took place at St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Uppingham, the Rev Ian Watts officiating.

Widow of Arthur she leaves her daughter Doreen, son Stephen, 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Her daughter Pauline and grandson Michael predeceased her.
