Thousands of people will be given an oar-some view of a spectacular charity race tomorrow (Saturday)

The 17th Peterborough Dragon Boat Race will take place at the Peterborough Rowing Lake - and competitors will have to beat an Olympic medallist if they want to pick up the winners trophy this year.

Peterborough gymnast Louis Smith will be in the Fitzwilliam Hospital boat, along side stars from the Peterborough Phantoms play-off winning ice hockey team.

Carol Lester, from organisers Gable Events said: “We have had a fantastic response, and have 35 teams.”

“It is the second time the event has been held at the rowing lake, and Carol said: “This year the charity we are supporting is Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall appeal, and the lake is almost next door to the hospice, so it is a great location.

“Because it is such a well known charity, fundraising is going very well this year, and we are sure teams have raised lots of money.”

As well as racing, there’s a fair, children’s entertainment, food and a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flypast at 2pm.

Each team entered will race at least three times. The first race is set to get underway at 10.30am, with the final set to start at about 5pm.
