Osprey book to launch at Birdfair tomorrow
This year’s Birdfair is already proving a hive of activity and tomorrow at the event, a new activity book specifically written for children will be launched by the Rutland Osprey Project.
‘Be an Osprey Expert’ contains information, activities, and puzzles for children between six and 12 years of age.
Children can use the book when visiting the ospreys at Rutland Water Nature Reserve or can complete the activities by using the Rutland Osprey Project website www.ospreys.org.uk. When the book is completed readers are awarded an osprey expert certificate.
Written by two of the Rutland Osprey Project team, Jackie and Pete Murray, the book features photographs and artwork by the project’s Field Officer John Wright and photographs by Pete Murray. The children featured as ‘osprey experts’ are from Edith Weston primary school in Rutland.
Author Jackie Murray said: “We wanted something that would help youngsters to engage with the ospreys. Children often visit the reserve with their parents, grandparents or teachers and this book will enrich their experience.”
Pete added: “Children know that the ospreys are special - and to see them is very exciting - but they can use this book to understand more in a fun and exciting way and then take it home and continue to use it there.”
The book is now on sale at the Rutland Water Nature Reserve Visitor Centres at Egleton and Lyndon, priced at £5.
The book will be officially launched during a special event at this year’s Birdfair at 3.30pm on Sunday. The event starts today.
Children from Brooke Priory School, Rutland will be on hand to sing a special song about the Rutland Ospreys.
Production of the book was sponsored by The Martin Lawrence Memorial Trust and optics manufacturer Swarovski Optic.
All proceeds will go towards the work of the Rutland Osprey Project.
