A teenager was thrilled to see months of hard work pay off when she collected her gold Duke of Edinburgh Award at St James’ Palace.

Oundle School pupil Coco Story took on a series of challenges to complete the award alongside studying for her A-levels during the last year.

She took driving lessons, spent three days hiking in the Yorkshire Dales, played hockey, attended a residential cookery course and did voluntary work to complete the award.

She collected her certificate from The Duke of Edinburgh during a ceremony at St James’ Palace which was also attended by presenter and comedian Jonathan Ross as a special guest.

Coco, of Church Lane, Stibbington, said: “The gold award is something I’ve always wanted to do because I thought it would be a good challenge.

“I skipped straight from bronze to the gold award so I had a lot of extra work to do.

“The challenges were things I wouldn’t normally do so it was a completely different experience.

“The presentation ceremony was amazing.

“Jonathan Ross was the guest host so he made it really relaxed and the Duke of Edinburgh was really funny when he spoke to a group of us.”

Proud mum Suzy added: “It was a huge honour to go to the palace to see Coco collect her award.

“It was quite hard work so I’m really proud of her for continuing and getting to the end.”

Coco, 18, hopes to study biology at university in September before pursuing a career as a stockbroker.
