Plan to bring cinema nights back to Oakham
A monthly cinema is set to restart at Rutland County Museum and volunteers are being urged to come forward to make the scheme a success.
Arts for Rutland plans to launch the monthly film screening on the first Thursday of the month from September.
The group is working with Rutland County Museum, volunteers and members of Catmose Film Club to bring regular screenings back to Oakham for the first time since 2012, when Live@ the Museum was axed due to council budget cuts.
Joy Everitt is on the Arts for Rutland committee as treasurer.
She said the idea had been in the pipeline for some time but volunteers were needed to make it a long-term reality.
The first film to be screened will be The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy.
Joy said: “We are working very hard to get something going and we think it’s something that will be well-received.
“It’s just so nice to be able to walk to the cinema and have a drink and it is something that would be of huge benefit to Oakham.”
She appealed to anyone who would be interested in helping to contact her.
She said: “We would encourage anyone who is interested in helping out, either at the film nights or in the planning and marketing of the project.
“We are particularly interested in anyone with knowledge of film and interested in helping with the best choice of movie, as well as people who can help be ushers on film screening nights.
“The more people we have the better it will be as it will secure the long-term future of it.
“We really hope that everyone will support us in bringing cinema back to the museum.”
Joy said she knew many village halls around the county screened films but the benefit of the museum was that it already had its own projection equipment and raked seating.
She said Rutland County Council had been consulted on the idea and backed the plans.
The intention is to sell tickets at a cost of £5 from Music and More and from www.wegottickets.com.
The first four films have been selected although tickets are not yet on sale.
The museum has a licence so there will be a bar on film nights, as well as soft drinks and other refreshments.
