A Rutland man hopes to set up a county-wide social club where men can get together and enjoy hobbies and activities.

Mark Nichols, from Braunston, wants to launch the Men’s Shed project in Rutland.

The idea, which started in Australia but has spread across the world, is based on the idea that men like spending time tinkering, repairing, and making things while socialising with others who have similar interests.

Mark, who runs not-for-profit organisation Welland Valley Wood Recycling, thought the Men’s Shed project would be perfect for Rutland.

“I saw it on television and it’s something that just struck a chord,” he said. “I wondered how many people, especially men, are in the situation where they are in the house all the time. They don’t see people from day to day.

“I live in Braunston. I have been here two years and I know two people and that’s it.

“A Men’s Shed is a place for men to go and do activities. It could be photography, woodworking, community work. I’d like to expand it do DIY classes for single families.

“It’s like a big social club without the alcohol, but with plenty of tea and biscuits.”

There are plenty of Men’s Shed projects already set up across the UK. Mark is keen to launch one in Rutland as well, but needs help getting it off the ground.

He said: “I spoke to Age UK and they were quite keen on trying to get it started. They are looking at rental properties and funding.

“It needs business plans and fundraising, and finding somewhere to go. Most of the tools are donated.

“We need anything that would help. Someone with a business mind, volunteers and funding.”
