THE Army barracks which will replace RAF Cottesmore has been named.

Kendrew Barracks at the former RAF base will be named after the late Major General Sir Douglas Kendrew, a former pupil at Uppingham School who served in the Royal Leicestershire Regiment.

Major General Kendrew served in North Africa, Italy, Korea and Cyprus during the Second World War and is one of the few officers to have been awarded the Distinguished Service Order four times.

Rutland MP Alan Duncan said: “While we were all sad to see the RAF depart Cottesmore for the last time, it is positive that the new barracks will carry on local tradition by being named after a local hero.

“The renaming, along with the imminent arrival of more personnel, is another important step towards welcoming the Army to Cottesmore.”
