PLANS for two new football pitches in Barleythorpe were approved last night.

Representatives from Oakham United Football Club which submitted the plans and from Barleythorpe village who opposed the plans were present.

The decision was made at a special meeting of Rutland County Council at Catmose.

It was referred to the whole council as the development control and licensing committee was divided.

The pitches will be used by Oakham United and students at the new Rutland County College which is being developed alongside them.

There are currently no adult football pitches in Oakham and the surrounding area and Oakham United has been using the facilities at Catmose College.

They will continue to play there until the new pitches are ready for use next year.
