Sixty-one new homes and a car park will be built on the site of a former school in Oakham.

Bellway Homes has been granted planning permission to develop land off Barleythorpe Road which was formerly occupied by The Parks School.

The development site also includes part of a field which was owned by Tresham Institute. It will include 61 homes ranging from one to four bedrooms with options for renting and shared ownership.

Neighbours were concerned about the loss of privacy and Sports England objected to the loss of the playing field space but the plans were approved by Rutland County Council’s development control committee on Tuesday.

Bellway Homes sales manager Jane Yolland said: “We are delighted to have secured planning permission and are looking forward to starting work.

“We have put together a range of house styles which we feel meets the needs of the market in Oakham. It’s a great location, close to the town centre and the railway station, so we are expecting it to be a popular site.”

The homes will be accessed off Huntsman Drive with a footpath linking to Barleythorpe Road.

The company also submitted plans for a 22-space car park on the site. The aim is to reduce congestion along Barleythorpe Road by providing residents there with off-street parking.

The original plans included 18 spaces but the number was increased by four because residents did not think 18 would be enough.

Bellway Homes is now waiting to finalise a legal agreement with the council before work can start.

It will commit the developer to making financial contributions towards police, fire and health services, sport and leisure, library and museum services, waste and recycling and children’s services.

Bellway Homes is already building new homes at The Maltings in Barleythorpe where its show home opened last week.

The Parks School moved to Burley Road where it shares a site with Oakham CE Primary School.
