AN RAF officer has been braving the desert heat to keep soldiers fit.

Warrant Officer Mark Hayhurst, 40, from Stamford, has spent the last six months working as a physical training instructor at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan.

His main role is to ensure the camp’s fitness equipment is working properly. He also runs heat acclimatisation training sessions to keep troops in top physical condition in the desert heat.

WO Hayhurst has lived in Stamford with his wife Charlotte and daughter Olivia, eight, for 12 years. He was the physio for Blackstones AFC for several years and was The RAF and Combined Services football squad’s sports therapist for 10 years earning himself a Command in Chief’s Commendation.

WO Hayhurst completes his tour of Afghanistan at the end of this month.

He said: “Being away from my family has been very hard as we are very close, but seeing the excitement of the lads when we’ve been able to get out to them and fix their gym equipment helps.”
