COUNCILLORS have backed plans for a petrol station in Oakham.

Rutland County Council’s development control committee unanimously approved Hawksmead’s application for a six-pump petrol station with a kisok and car wash on land on the corner of Lands’ End Way and Burley Park Way at at a meeting last night (Tuesday).

Planning officers at the county council had recommended the plans be approved but Langham Parish Council and one resident had objected to the plans.

Developer Hawksmead, which is building 1,100 homes in Oakham intends to look for a partner to build the petrol station.

The same site had previously been considered for a Sainsbury’s supermarket and petrol station but councillors refused the plans because the land had been allocated for employment use. But a petrol station is classed as roadside services.
