A COUNTY council has applied for permission to use the kitchens at four schools to provide meals to other schools nearby.
Lincolnshire County Council has submitted the change of use application for Malcolm Sargent and St Gilbert’s primary schools, in Stamford, Bourne Abbey Primary Academy in Bourne and Linchfield Primary School in Deeping St James.
The council said if the applications were approved, the contractors operating from those kitchens would be able to bid to take on work for more schools.
The equipment at each school is capable of catering for up to 900 meals a day.
Assistant director for children’s services Debbie Barnes said: “Although, it will be up to the private meal provider operating from these kitchens to win contracts, it is intended these kitchens will supply schools in the surrounding areas, for which some meals are currently transported from Sleaford.
“The planning permission will enable school meals to be transported to neighbouring schools, reducing food mileage and ensuring additional pupils benefit from freshly produced, locally sourced food.”
