A supermarket says it is “considering its options” after plans for a rival chain were approved.

Tesco has planning permission to double the size of its store in South Street, Oakham.

But in a letter of objection to plans for a Sainsbury’s store in Barleythorpe Road in Oakham, Tesco said the plans were on hold while it awaited the outcome of the Sainsbury’s application.

Sainsbury’s was given permission for the 50,000 sq ft store by Rutland County Council on March 25.

Councillors approved Tesco’s extension plans at a full council meeting in November 2010 and it was officially signed off in March 2011.

Permission has been granted to extend to the south and west, taking up some of the existing car park and creating a mezzanine level.
