Popular Walk of Witness event to take place in Stamford on Good Friday

The Walk of Witness returns to Stamford next Friday with the procession set to be watched by hundreds of shoppers and churchgoers as it makes its way around the town centre.

The event starts at 12 noon at the bottom of Ironmonger Street with Stamfordians Patrick Allen and Nyron Howitt, who are in their early 20s, carrying a rather large cross. They then head up High Street and into Star Lane with a stop outside Poacher’s Passage for the singing of a hymn before continuing on to Broad Street to Red Lion Square.

The procession returns through High Street to Ironmonger Street, where the new minister of the United Reform Church Peter Stevenson will be the speaker. The master of ceremonies will be Roman Catholic Priest Father Gillsespie.

However, there will be no Jesus taking part this year. Rob Shaw, Walk of Witness, representative for Churches Together, says no-one was available to do the physically demanding role this year, but a Jesus has been found for next year.
