More 400 children from primary and secondary schools in Stamford, Bourne and further afield took part in the inaugural cross country championships at the new Stamford Welland Academy.

Parents and staff were on hand to cheer the children to the finish on a bright and sunny Saturday morning, with trophies being awarded to the top finishers.

The event is one of many that Stamford Welland Academy aims to host throughout the year.

Others include a tag rugby festival, dance festival and track and field athletics events.

Principal Anthony Partington said: “It’s been a pleasure to host the latest cross country championships at Stamford Welland Academy. The turn out as usual has been brilliant and I’d like to congratulate all the winners, and thank all those who came down to help or show their support.”

Director of sport Steve Bull added: “At Stamford Welland Academy we look to build relationships with all local primary schools to assist in the delivery of physical education in any way we can.

“This not only allows us to lead sessions on specialist subject areas, but also allows us to build relationships with pupils so that, should they choose to attend the Academy, their transition will be a lot smoother.”
