Former RAF man John Childs is auctioning an embroidery for NHS hospitals in Stamford and Rutland
An RAF veteran who has taken up crafts in his retirement is auctioning an intricate piece of embroidery to support his local hospitals.
John Childs, 83, who was widowed two years ago after 57 years of marriage, is keeping himself busy during lockdown by creating ornate wooden bowls and other decorative items in the garage of his home in Arran Road.
Not only has he made bird tables, bird boxes, chess sets and lamp bases over the years, he has also tried his hand at knitting, and at embroidery. And while he admits he wasn't great at knitting, the embroidery, which took him four years to complete, was a success - yet it has been kept tucked away in pristine condition at his home for nearly 40 years.
