Young people in Rutland can continue to benefit from discounted driver training following a decision by Rutland County Council to extend its Pass Plus subsidy for another year.
Pass Plus is an established training course aimed at newly qualified drivers who want to gain more confidence on the road.
Designed by the Driving Standards Agency with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry, Pass Plus is recommended for new drivers in the first year after passing their test – improving their skills and helping to lower the cost of car insurance.
Pass Plus usually costs £150 but Rutland County Council are subsidising the scheme by 50 per cent for young drivers under 25 who live in Rutland, meaning they pay just £75.
Portfolio holder for highways at Rutland County Council Tony Mathias (Con) said: “Statistics show that new drivers are more likely to have an accident in the first two years after passing their test due to lack of driving experience.
“Pass Plus can help to build on newly acquired driving skills to teach you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with all kinds of hazards. The ultimate aim is to help you become a more confident and competent driver.
“Areas covered by Pass Plus include rural roads and motorways, which is invaluable for young people who live and drive in Rutland. Continued support for Pass Plus is therefore extremely important and we hope young drivers will take up the opportunity to access the scheme at a greatly reduced cost.”
With the help of an Approved Driving Instructor, Pass Plus participants cover: driving in town, in all weathers, on rural roads, at night, and on dual carriageways and motorways. But there is no test at the end.
Lilli Atkin, 18, passed her driving test earlier this year and began taking Pass Plus with instructor Dave Worrall in March.
She said: “I found Pass Plus really useful – particularly the experience it gave me driving on motorways, because you don’t cover that as a learner and it’s so different to driving on A roads.
“The course is much more relaxed than learning to drive because it’s more about gaining experience. I felt a lot more comfortable with my driving after doing Pass Plus.”
