An evening of music and family fun is taking place at Rutland Water to open a new disabled-friendly outdoor gym for young people.

Families from across the area are invited to bring a picnic and take part in the celebrations, which take place today between 4pm and 7pm at the Whitwell site.

The new outdoor gym has been put together by Rutland County Council, Rutland Parent Carer Voice, a local group that represents families with disabled children and young people, and Anglian Water, which operates the reservoir.

The gym includes a full range of outdoor equipment some of which is disabled-friendly, including arm and pedal bikes, a double cross country skier, double rowers and bicycles.

The work has been funded with a Government grant for the Aiming High team at the council, for the work it does in supporting children and young people with disabilities and additional needs.

Rutland county councillor Kenneth Bool (Con) said: “The new outdoor gym, fitted out with disabled-friendly equipment, is a welcome addition to the facilities on offer at Rutland Water.

“I’m sure it will prove extremely popular with visitors as well as local residents, and I’d like to offer my congratulations to everyone involved.

“The council recognises the importance of making sure our services are accessible and we’ve already got excellent links into the Rutland Access Forum.

“I’d like to thank Rutland Parent Carer Voice for working with the council on this project, as its knowledge and guidance was extremely welcome.”

Kevin Appleton, Anglian Water’s visitor operations manager, said: “We’re delighted to support the gym, which is a fantastic addition to the facilities at Rutland Water.

“It’s great to have something which further improves access for disabled people and the reservoir’s appeal as a top visitor attraction.”
