A steady stream of visitors escaped the rain by pouring into the Rutland Fairtrade Market.

Most stallholders at the event, which was held at the Victoria Hall in Oakham on Saturday, reported good sales.

Among the colourful displays of Fairtrade products from around the world were many unusual handmade craft items which would make unique gifts for friends and family.

One stall, run by “the Complete Wasters,” had quite beautiful items made from recycled materials.

As well as enjoying the variety of stalls on offer and picking up a Christmas present or two, visitors could also enjoy a cup of tea with a homemade cake, all made with Fairtrade products of course!

Chairman of Rutland County Council Ken Bool, opening the market, spoke of the value of Fairtrade to both producers and consumers. He thanked the stall holders for their commitment to the fair trade movement and assured them of the council’s backing.

Later in the day Andrew Brown, the High Sheriff of Rutland, drew the raffle and presented a hamper to the winner, Ian Ray of Empingham.

The raffle raised £75 for Traidcraft Exchange, a charity pioneering new Fairtrade opportunities in the world’s poorest communities.
