Rutland gardening project officially launched
A new council-backed project to help people improve their health through gardening is up and running following a special launch event at Oakham Castle.
Grow Together aims to encourage people of all ages to get involved in gardening and enjoy the benefits of outdoor activity. The project also offers participants the chance to learn new skills and share knowledge.
The volunteer-led project is aimed at both experienced gardeners and those who are new to growing food and plants.
Grow Together was launched at a special event at Oakham Castle on Saturday attended by more than 150 people. The launch featured a seed swap, free newspaper plant pot-making and vegetable art for children, in addition to presentations from the experienced gardeners behind the project.
Coun Lucy Stephenson, cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “Grow Together is a fantastic project that encourages you to get outside in the fresh air, meet new people and feel confident about ‘growing your own’.
“Gardening has so many benefits. It gets you moving, sparks creativity, reduces stress and is a great form of exercise. It was great to see so many people at Saturday’s launch. There are more events to come, for people of all ages and abilities, and we’re still looking for volunteers to help. If you love spending time in your garden, then get involved.”
Volunteers who help out with Grow Together will receive training, support and materials to assist them in their roles, as well as the opportunity to add to their own gardening knowledge.
Grow Together is run by Rutland County Council’s Active Rutland team and Root-and-Branch Out – a community group offering outdoor learning and play opportunities in partnership with local communities.
