Sarah Outen’s boat rescued after three months lost at sea
Record-breaking Rutland adventurer Sarah Outen was delighted this week when her Atlantic rowing boat Happy Socks turned up off the coast of Ireland.
Sarah had to abandon the boat in October part-way through the final leg of her London2London: Via The World challenge as Hurricane Joaquin approached.
She was picked up about 1,000 miles from the UK coastline, and went on to finish her challenge by kayaking along the Thames and under Tower Bridge on November 3. But the whereabouts of Happy Socks remained unknown until Tuesday, when Sarah had a message from the Valentia Coastguard.
Writing on her blog, Sarah said she nearly fell off her seat when she heard the news.
“We are making plans to go and retrieve her and shake the hands of the crew that picked her up, and give her a huge welcome home hug,” she added. “To me, it feels like a friend has come back from the dead. It is very special and very emotional and I am very grateful.”
Sarah is busy writing a book about her adventure, due for release this year.
