Bourne Academy is closed tomorrow (Tuesday, July 19) because of the heatwave.

In a letter to parents, Bourne Academy's executive headteacher Lucy Conley said the decision had been taken because of the "extreme weather situation" and with forecast set to rise to a "potential 42 degrees".

She said: "This has been a very difficult decision, which has not been taken lightly. We have coped well in all schools today. However, in light of even hotter weather, we have again reviewed students travel to and from school, and are now extremely concerned about heat on crowded buses and for our students who walk quite a distance to school.

"Additionally, now with a number of local secondary and primary schools, and some local nurseries announcing closures late this afternoon and this evening, this has meant that staff absence has been impacted on far more than first anticipated and covering all classes will be a significant challenge."

The school will be open to families of key workers who cannot accommodate their children at home and pupils will be accommodated in air-conditioned rooms.

It will reopen on Wednesday when trips will go ahead as planned.

Charles Read Academy in Corby Glen was closed today and will remain closed tomorrow.
