Fire at Uppingham Community College delays back-to-school plans until September 21

Damages caused by a school fire are 'more significant' than initially feared delaying back-to-school plans by weeks.

On Wednesday last week (August 26) a blaze occurred at Uppingham Community College causing damages to a three-storey building . Classrooms, the library and gym were damaged by the fire and smoke, as well as by the water and other methods used by firefighters to tackle the blaze.

Due to the coronavirus restrictions, a phased reopening was planned with pupils expected to return to the school from today (September 1). These plans were initially pushed back by one week however, after receiving health and safety advice the school has delayed the pupils' return until atleast September 21.
