Second Helpings give away 175 pumpkins on market stall

A market stall with a difference was at Stamford Market on Friday, November 9.

Run by Second Helpings, the stall was publicising the high volume of food wasted throughout the world by giving away pumpkins, along with recipes for pumpkin cheesecake; pumpkin, sage and sausage spaghetti; and pumpkin and pear soup.

The volunteers running the stall, including pupils from Wilds Lodge School, Second Helpings handed out almost 175 pumpkins that had been delivered only 24 hours earlier, which would have been destined to go t o waste.

Everyone was asked to pay as you feel in exchange for their pumpkin and more than £70 was raised by Second Helpings to go towards running the Saturday café, the food bunker and the new community fridge.

George Hetherington, founder of Second Helpings, said: “It was great to find homes for each of the pumpkins whilst helping to promote our campaign of feeding bellies not bins.”
