Rise in benefits claims points to increased unemployment and underemployment in Rutland, Stamford, Bourne and the Deepings
The number of people claiming benefits rose by 2,176 in South Kesteven and Rutland over a five-week period.
On April 9 there were 1,483 Rutlanders claiming universal credit. By May 14 this had risen by 400 to 1,883 - an increase of 27 per cent.
In South Kesteven, which includes Stamford, Bourne, the Deepings and Grantham, the number of people claiming went from 8,604 to 10,380 in the same period, an increase of 1,776, or a 21 per cent rise.
