Shoppers are encouraged to support local businesses in Oakham or risk losing them forever

Shoppers are being encouraged to support independent traders or risk losing them from the high street forever.

Oakham Town Council has launched a “Shop Oakham” campaign in a bid to save local businesses and boost the economy.

Four campaign banners will be displayed in the town in the lead up to Christmas.

Oakham mayor David Romney hopes it will encourage people to shop within the town rather than buy online.

He said: “The shops are struggling, especially now we are in a second lockdown.

“It’s all very well shopping online now, but when we come out of this pandemic and things get back to normal, the shops will be gone forever.

“We need a vibrant high street to bring more people into the town. In turn that will lead to more shops opening and more employment opportunities for local people.”

The banners will be displayed on Mill Street, the bypass roundabout, outside the library and at the Centenary Field near Lidl.

Rutland County Council plans to offer free parking in December with the dates still to be announced.
