Traders in Oakham are set to benefit from a boost in festive trade after the town was selected to take part in a national shopping scheme.
Businesses have clubbed together to host a shopping experience, which is sponsored by mobile phone network O2.
Shoppers can take part in the town’s Christmas Trail. People who visit each shop taking part will receive a stamp and be automatically entered into a free draw, with the top prize being a seven-night stay at a luxury self-catering apartment anywhere in the world for four people.
There are 18 town centre businesses involved in the trail. Maps of those taking part can be found at businesses involved.
The winner of the trail will be announced at Oakham’s Christmas late night shopping event on December 10 at 8pm.
Chairman of Oakham Town Partnership and mayor Alf Dewis said: “The trail has had a tremendous response from businesses which are looking to get into the Christmas spirit.
“It’s a great initiative for all our independent shops to get involved in and will be great fun for shoppers.”
Kate Yardley, who is organising the trail on behalf of Oakham Town Partnership, said: “It is an excellent opportunity for small retailers to literally put themselves on the map.
“This is a peak time of year for retailers and it’s important to make the absolute most of it.
“For shoppers it gives a fun and exciting opportunity to explore different retailers and to buy beautiful, different gifts that aren’t mass produced. There’s a real excitement amongst local people about the trail.”
Oakham’s late night Christmas shopping event will run from 5pm, and will include a host of fun.
There will be an ice-skating rink in Market Place, Christmas stalls along Mill Street and High Street, a fun fair in Church Street and a craft fair in Victoria Hall.
