Drama pupils brought an old Hollywood classic to life for an audience of friends, family and members of the community.

Oakham School's production of Singin' in the Rain was a roaring success, with musical numbers and dance routines wowing the audience.

While the classic song ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ hit all of the right notes with the audience, other musical numbers such as ‘Good Morning’ and ‘All I Do is Dream of You’ went down a storm.

Lina Lamont’s iconic ‘What’s Wrong With Me?’ number was popular with the audience, with Form 7 pupil Izzy portraying the well-known high-pitched voice of her character.

The production was supported by many departments at the school including Oakham School Music, which performed alongside the cast with a band made up of pupils and staff.

Taking on one of the lead roles as Don Lockwood, was Form 7 pupil Zsolti. He said: “I’ve always loved the dance element of musicals and I’ve really enjoyed learning and performing the choreography for Singin’ in the Rain.

"The show was a huge success, and our audience was given glitz, glamour and romance.”

The classic musical follows the tale of movie stars Don and Lina, as they navigate the transition from silent films to the era of the talkies.

While the power couple have repeatedly been cast as a romantic duo, Lina’s voice doesn’t match up to the standard of sound needed, so aspiring actress, Kathy, is hired to record over her voice, much to Lina’s distaste.

The production included many technical aspects to it, including displaying several silent movie clips and some audio dubbing.

Gilly Norell, director of drama at Oakham School, said: “We were thrilled to bring the music and nostalgia of Singin’ in the Rain to Oakham and our actors enjoyed transporting our audiences into an era of old-time Hollywood.

“Each and every one of our pupils and members of staff who were involved in the production has done an incredible job and I’m so proud of what we’ve all managed to achieve. It’s been a wonderful team effort.”

The production ran from November 30 to December 4.
